General News & Special Notices:

The main series of this year’s paintings I’m calling Still Point. This
is a reference to that point of calm and clarity in my meditation where an
answer can emerge. Since meditation is part of my process, these paintings
symbolize rising above the chaos of the day so that I can focus on a new

project or find the missing piece to complete a work in progress.
I’m also including three related paintings from the Fluid Tension Series of 2009, as well as someportraits. At least once a year a beautiful spot inspires me to paint a landscape or an interesting building, but my favorite kind of realistic painting has always been portraits.

For more information about these or other paintings Please

Mission Work Calls!!  Here is a message from Phil Cramer to Judy Nicholson about he and his wife, Kris's, mission work in Switzerland!!

Dear Judy, Nice to hear from you.......  Currently, Kris and I are serving a mission for our church in Switzerland.  We are supporting a Center for Young Single Adults, young people from 18-30. It's a difficult age so we are doing what we can to help them stay on the straight and narrow path. We have been here since November 2010 and won't return until April 2013.........  say "Gruetzi" to anyone who asks about us. Best regards, Phil Cramer

Highclimber Super Reunion (http://www.sheltonhigh.com/)!!!  Here are some of the details of the SUPER REUNION that were provided by Toni Fonzo Thompson (Everett "Mac" McCoy's sister), which will be held at the Little Creek Casino near Shelton this summer:

Just want to pass the word that we are planning a Super Reunion for 2 decades of Shelton Graduates. All Classes from 1960-1979. Please join our facebook page at; http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/home.php?sk=group_153720631349874&ap=1 for updates. Our tenative date is July and will be confirmed this next week.

Our webpage should be up by the end of next week. We expect a minimum of 500 classmates attending and that is very conservative...the number should reach closer to 700+. Everyone is very excited. We are having a planning meeting at The PUD auditorium in Shelton on Cota st. Wednesday March 2 @ 6:30pm all classmates are welcome. Please pass this info on to your class as well as any other classmates in the years 60-79. We don't want to miss anyone.

Please feel free to pass this email address along and our FB page link...any questions I will be happy to answer.

Thanks,
Toni Thompson

email: highclimbersuperreunion@gmail.com

An earlier message to Judy Nicholson included this info from Toni:

We have an amazing amount of interest.  It will be fantastic to share the moments with many of our classmates from other graduating years.  The tentative date is July 16 at the little creek concert hall..the only venue large enough to hold the number we believe will be attending. We anticipate a minimum of 500 and closer to 800.   That date should be confirmed this next week.  We are having a planning meeting in Shelton on Wed. March 2 @ 6:30pm PUD auditorium on Cota Street. We would welcome any classmates to attend and please RSVP so we have an idea of how many. Right now we have about 30 attending the meeting and we have plenty of work to accomplish so every lending hand is welcome...as this is a 2 decade reunion.   It was originally scheduled for last Thursday but due to the weather we had to reschedule as several of us were traveling from the Seattle area as well as other areas.

UPDATE!!  Here is the lastest updated info on the super reunion.

The following is he latest information we have on Candy (Avery) Johnston's condition, and what we can do to show our support for her and her family at this sad and stressful time (latest news is at the top).

   14. From Judy Nicholson's email 5/10/2011: Hi Everyone, I finally did it…I finally got over to see Candy! Talk about a miracle!  She looks absolutely wonderful and sounds even better.  We had a nice visit.  She says to tell everyone hello and is always happy to have visitors, just not first thing in the morning – that’s when she has her chores to do.  Her facility is really nice.  It’s small and is very homey.  She really likes it there, but she’s more than ready to head home.  She is recovering dramatically I feel.  She still has lots of healing to do, but she is simply amazing.  Get over to see her if you can.

13. From Judy Nicholson's email 4/15/2011: Patty called me yesterday to tell me that Candy has been moved to a care home in Olympia for rehab and healing.  This is wonderful news for her family because she is so much closer.  The name of the facility is Olympia Manor Nursing Home @ 1811 – 22nd Ave SE, Olympia98501.  The resident phone is:  360-705-1451.  As for an update about Candy’s condition, she had issues with a blood clot in her leg and they put the neck collar back on her because she did break her neck.  This info just kind of trickles in.  I cannot even begin to imagine what this woman has been through; please continue to keep her in your prayers.

12. From Judy Nicholson's email 4/3/2011: Hi Everyone, I just had a phone call from Patty duToit with great news about Candy.  Her new room number is 712-East Wing.  She has a phone and it is:  206-744-8352 and Patty said she wakes early.  Patty also said that Candy needs all the visitors during the week that can go see her.  She also continues to need prayer and I assured her that that certainly will continue.  And Patty said that the family still needs prayer too.  In the email link to Candy her whole name is Candice Johnston.  That is the correct spelling.  I, for one, have been spelling it incorrectly.  So she is improving although she still has issues she is dealing with.  Please go for a visit if you can.

The prayers are working so keep ‘em coming!  And God bless of you too!Group hug.

7. From Judy Nicholson's email 3/3/2011:  Patty called this evening and said that Candy had her whole colon removed today.  That is where major infection and blockage was.  Candy is still in grave danger and Patty would like us to continue with our prayers.  She also said that the children/family are staying with Candy at the hospital.  I assured her that we will indeed maintain our support.

6. From Judy Nicholson's email 3/2/2011: Hello Everyone,  Today’s report is that they have found where the infection in her mid-section is located, it is in her colon, which is blocked.  They were going to try to take care of that today.

Patty asks that we continue sending prayers for her support.  I know we will.  Her family is hanging in there and doing as well as they can.

5. From Judy Nicholson's email 3/1/2011: Hi Everyone,  I just got off the phone with Patty [Hester DuToit].  She and Janice Dawson went to Harborview to see about Candy today.  They could not go in her room.  The hospital still does not want people to come.  But they got to visit with her family which was a good thing and they did see Candy from the hallway.  Candy is heavily sedated so her body can heal.

Her leg has been operated on and is in a cast now.  Her wound on her stomach area is serious and infected.  It is from the seatbelt.  The other things are still going on.  The family said the emails are welcomed because when Candy is more aware they are going to start showing them to her.

So our prayers and emails are still needed.  Candy has a long road ahead of her.  But the good thing is that Patty came away from this visit with a positive outlook.  The family is thankful for all of our concern…so keep up the good work guys.

4. From Judy Nicholson's email 2/25/2011: Hi Everyone,  Patty called me this evening with an update on Candy.  The broken part in her hand was a finger.  The broken vertebrae is in her neck and they put a neck brace on her today.  She’s had some surgery on her leg, but it’s not done yet.  She has some broken ribs.  Her sternum is broken.  She has a bad wound on her stomach area.  And she still has her tube in her throat.

But she is aware and her family is there.  I guess Stan died right away and Candy was not unconscious.  Patty will continue to give us news as she gets it from Candy’s sister.  I assured her that we all would be continuing our prayers.

3. Here is a link to an article in the Port Townsend newspaper about the auto accident:

UPDATED 1:25 p.m. TUESDAY. Feb. 22
http://ptleader.com/main.asp?Search=1&ArticleID=28713&SectionID=36&SubSectionID=55&S=1

You can also provide messages and condolences on the newspaper website.

2. From Judy Nicholson's email 2/23/2011: Hi Everyone,  Patty [Hester-DuToit] just called me with an update on Candy.  They took the tube out of her throat today.  They found a compound fracture in one of her hands and did surgery on that today.  They have found a compound fracture in one of her legs, but are waiting to do surgery on that.  She has only one broken vertebrae, not two as they previously thought.  It will be about six months recovery time.  She is in the most critical ICU presently and as she improves will be put in the next level ICU.

The accident happened about midnight and they were not found until the time published in the paper, about 5:45 a.m.  Stan was killed on impact and it took about an hour to get Candy into the helicopter for Harborview.  Stan has been cremated and when Candy is ready there will be a memorial.

No flowers or people are wanted at the hospital.  However, she is aware and we can send her emails.  Bill [LeDrew] found the correct link for us...... below.   It goes directly to the page to leave her an email message.  So that is about all we can do for now.  Patty said she’ll keep us posted.  She talks to Candy’s sister.

Group hug…you’re all special!

P.S. You can also send a message to Candi and her family through the Port Townsend newspaper on the link below.

Here is the link provided by Bill LeDrew to send Candy an email:  http://uwmedicine.washington.edu/patient-care/locations/hmc/patient-family-resources/pages/gifts-and-e-mails.aspx

1. From Judy Nicholson's email 2/22/2011: Hi Everyone,   I trust you have all been informed by now of Candy’s car accident Sunday morning that put her in Harborview and killed her husband, Stan Johnston.  I just talked to Patty [Hester] DuToit who had not heard before I emailed her today.  She has talked to Candy’s daughter-in-law, Lisa.  Lisa said that Candy has several broken bones, head injuries, and is on a respirator.  She will be in Harborview for “quite a while”, possibly a month................

Also thought I would mention that Wendy’s Dad is really sick at the present…so lots of people are needing prayers.

We received the following  messages from Gabriel House about Renie Faver's (Irene Emsley's) health condition. Please keep Renie and Ted in your thoughts and prayers.

From: Renie Faver (Irene Emsley); Sent: February 9, 2010
Subject: Prayer Request

Dear Friends,
Please take a minute and pray for me.
My routine annual CAT scan revealed
a 1 cm "spot" on my lung.
I have total peace; the Lord is my peace
my fortress and my deliverer.
I will, of course,
have my doctor in the US take a look at this.
Please pray...
because I know prayer changes things.
I am too busy to have this distraction
and covet your prayers for a quick resolution.  --
Love in the mighty name of Jesus
Renie

August 21, 2010
Dear Friends of Gabriel House,
It has been several months since there has been a newsletter from Gabriel House and much has happened.  Things are well with Gabriel House but Renie is struggling with serious health issues.
Ted and Renie have tried not to burden anyone with their health or financial concerns but Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”  Ted and Renie bear the load of Gabriel House and burdens are the extra thing that come up, that is why we are sending this note.

Some weeks ago Renie had severe back pain and it was determined to be coming from her kidney.  It is plugged and not draining properly due to an infection thought to have been handled and over with.  As a result they have had to make many trips to San Diego for treatment and she is scheduled to go back on Monday to be admitted to the hospital.  This has caused a burden on their personal budget and they have used all their reserves.

We don’t know what is ahead of them in the way of medical expenses and personal living expenses for Ted while Renie is in San Diego in the hospital.  Please pray for her healing and God’s financial provision.  I know that God is her healer and provider but I also know that He works through doctors and generous friends who are willing and able to help financially in their time of need.  If you are able to help, please send your check to Mexican Medical, 7850 Lester Avenue, Lemon Grove, CA. 91945 with Ted & Renie in the memo area or on-line at  www.mexicanmedical.com

The last message below indicates a positive change in her condition.

August 26, 2010
We just wanted to update you on Renie’s visit to the hospital in San Diego.
She is home now and feeling much better.  They ran a battery of test and when her doctor came in to see her he was shocked to see her good test results.  He said, “I’ve never seen anyone go from where your lab work was to where it is now!  Are you taking anything other than what I’ve prescribed for you?”  Renie told him she believes in prayer and that God answers prayers and that is the only explanation for her good outcome.

Please continue to pray for her strength and energy to return.  There will be follow-up doctor’s visits in San Diego and she is expecting a good report then too.

Thank you for your love and support of these two servants of the Lord.
Blessings,
David and Peggy Fend
Friends of Gabriel House

For more than 40 years Jerry Wagner has been living and performing throughout the Olympia area, both with various rock, country and jazz ensembles and as a soloist for receptions, weddings, piano bar, and easy listening events. A 1972 music graduate of St. Martins College, he retired from the State of Washington in 2009 where he worked in information technology. He has been on the staff of the Johansen School of Ballet,( now Johansen Olympia Dance Center) for 27 years, where he plays for ballet classes. He is also the pianist for Ballet Northwest, a local ballet company, and also serves on the board for that organization. He is occasionally called upon to serve as pianist for touring dance groups, such as Dance Theater of Harlem, Mark Morris Dance Group and Paul Taylor Dance Company.

Class gathering at Gerry Ann's 10 Oct '09: Hi Fellow Classmates,Those of you who were unable to come to Gerry’s house last Saturday were surely missed.  Truly.  Those that were there spent the afternoon trying to eat all the food that showed up, but it was impossible.  The weather was great too – not sunny, but not windy or wet either – just right, so we wandered in and out, enjoying that beautiful yard of Gerry’s.  I always am of the opinion that it is a sanctuary and would like to make a daily trek around, but I use humungous restraint and don’t do that.

We had great fun catching up on news, both in the past and forthcoming.  Gail and Dan leave this week for their six month stay in Mexico.  I’m a bad reporter because I can’t tell you the town now [Mazatlan].  I could for about two minutes after Dan told me, but that was last Saturday afterall.  Suzi has brand new twin grandsons (in Bothell) and had wonderful pictures.  She says she will probably not retire for another two years.  She loves her job.  Sue was in Africa for a three week church mission and then came home and did the Danskin triathlon at Lk. Washington (for the second year in a row).  She was at a baby shower in her neighborhood, but Bill (Suzi’s brother) filled in for her.  Gerry just got done doing the Oysterfest thing which is a big deal and is now in the throes of gearing up for the FantasyForest thing which is the big fund raiser for the hospital.  She’s always busy.  Bill LeDrew looks fantastic having lost even more weight and he brought Gerry some beautiful dahlias from his yard.  Wendy is involved in getting scrapbooking done about her parents and their 65+ years together.  Dan is getting into genealogy more and more he said, as is Jan Dishon and Sue Aho.  Jan did some traveling across country doing cemetery work [indexing headstones for the United State Cemetery Project - http://www.uscemeteryproj.com/] and genealogy work.  She is still involved in her church food bank and music programs too.  She’s another very busy lady.  Lynne did a lot of sailing during the summer and had family out visiting and is awaiting the birth of grandchild number one, which will be back east.  Core said Joel is doing very well and is back to golfing.  He’s not 100% yet, but should be in about three to six months, which was wonderful news.  It always takes time to get your strength back completely after any surgery.

I mean it when I say we missed you all who didn’t make it.  We just talked about you, you know that.  We didn’t have any formal business to discuss or anything, it was just a get together to stay in touch since the reunion was over one year ago already.  Time passes so quickly.  I think we will try to get together at least once a year to stay connected and gear up for the 50th reunion.  If any of you would like to send in ideas of where to have the 50th please do.  I’ve been cogitating about an idea I have for some time now and I think I will just send out an email about it one of these days instead of tangling it up in this email.

Just know that you are all loved, appreciated, admired and wished the best always in all ways.  I’ll see soon on this electronic highway.

Judy Saeger

Dear Class of 1963,
It was a great reunion and we thank you very much for inviting us. We really enjoyed seeing former students and renewing old acquaintances. The food was delicious ~ so well planned.
Good luck to everyone.

 Travel News:

Out and About with Martin:

Below is a travel log from Martin Felix's journey to South Aftrica. It's so much fun to see what our classmates are doing with their "spare" time.

Wednesday, September 03, 2008: Greetings from South Africa.  Arrived here at Oliver Tambo international airport 9:00PM, after close to 24 hours in the planes and airports.  I was sandwiched in on the flights especially the first leg when I had a very large young Seattle attorney occupying more than his alotted seat given his size.  On landing at Amsterdam I was amazed at the huge number of greenhouses I could see.  Amsterdam airport did intimidate me slightly as I am now turning into a little old man, but I soon figured out where to go.

The leg from Asterdam gave me a cool view of the Alps, the Italian boot, the Sahara and the Congo.  It was dark by the time we got to SA, and landed a bit after 9:00PM.  I was amazed at how quick I got through SA immigration and customs....maybe all of 5 or 10 minutes or so.  Very efficient and they were quite nice.  My cousin's were right there.   My tummy is still a little unsettled from the airline food so today will be a day to settle down a bit.  I walked about the neighborhood and saw a lot of really interesting plants.  The houses are all a bit fortress like with walls and electric fences, but it a quite nece neighborhood.  Lots of cool plants and a few things in bloom here in the winter time.

Eugene is an architect and works out of the house here, and has a studio upstairs.  The kids, Martin and Brendan are 10th graders, and I took their pictures this moring as they went off to school.  They are in public school, and they all wear uniforms- they are madatory.  No designer clothes for them.  Martin is a computer geek and has quite the set up here.  Ebban, the oldest works for a computer comany doing graphic work.  In the next couple of days will head for Kruger Park, and then Durban, and later to the Cape.  I am discovering the power of the African sun....    Later.....

September 4, 2008: Sorry to hear about Mike.....holy elephant doo doo...... we are dropping like flies, its making me nervous.   Glad to see the tibouchina hanging in there.  Great winter day here, going to be 80, and it will be HOT in Kruger park.  Leave for the park tomorrow AM.  Tummy still not adjusted, but better be by tomorrow!   I wont look at the pics here....using Martin's computer which is his prize and joy....he put it together himself, and it has one of those cases with all the neon like lighting.  Dont want to mess up his project.  The "kids" are off on their 10th grade adventure camp so they are out in the bush for a few days. I was surprised to see no tibouchinas in the yards here, but the trend here is to plant more indigenous plants....going to see the neighbors yard sometime today.....they have a full time gardener.   Taking it easy today.

September 5, 2008I cannot believe soome of the homes here....I saw one that was five stories clung on the hill.  One neighbor here has not one not two, but three maids and two gardeners.  You go from shanty towns to multimillion dollar homes in minutes.  Leaving for Kruger in a few minutes.

September 9, 2008:  Just back from 4 days in the bush.  Got a spam text message on my cell phone telling me I won a free piece of furniture if I....., and that in the MIDDLE of Kruger Park........  My guide got lost in Johannesburg last night in the dark, and could not find my cousins house, and I was of no help, and the cell phone ran out of battery....he was yelling at his boss, and too much pride to call my cousin, and concerned that if we were stopped on the side of the road we could be hit by bandits....finally found the place.    this is no country for wimps.... Going to try and get money today, and a few things I thought I packed, and then flying to Durban tomorrow-- that should be exciting.

September 16, 2008:   Yesterday saw the gardens at Makaranga Lodge including their rhododendron garden......tropical vireya rrhodies of mature size.  Incredible.  Am in Durban at the moment, and this has been real culture shock.  Today is laundry day, and will go to the ATM in a bit.  Going to the ATM is a thrill.  Police tell me they are afraid to use the one I have been using......at least one person has been murdered at the ATM.  Saw Wood's cycad at the Botanical Garden....the last plant of its species, a female so there will be no more ever (other than clones).  Discovered in the 1800's, and moved to the garden in 1895.  Pretty interesting here........later will go drink Namibian beer at Joe Cool's on the beach........

11. From Judy Nicholson's email 3/27/2011:Here I am again…Janice just sent in this report and I want you guys to see it ASAP.  This is truly wonderful news, isn’t it?  I am going to include the link Bill gave us to send Candy emails so that anyone can do that again.  Maybe she’ll get a whole stack to read… Thank you everyone!

We just came back from visiting Candy this morning and Patty is heading back to Salem.Candy is even better today. They removed a chest tube. (that is one more tube gone but several still left to go) Her central IV line has a fungal infection going on that they are medicating her for so they want to get it out soon.Candy asked about several of the classmates including Dan and Joan and she talked about Stan being gone.Judy she really wanted me to thank you for keeping everyone informed. As I said in the other email she really appreciates all of your prayers and would love to see anyone who can go to see her.

We have such an awesome class!!!!!!!!! Janice Dawson

Judy, You can forward this to the group if you like. Patty and I have great news to pass on. Patty arrived here on Friday the 25th because  Patty made plans with Candy's son Wade to visit with Candy. I had talked with Patty when we got word of Candy not doing better---my message was that Candy has been lying there for 5 weeks sedated with no real stimulation to make her fight for her life. Patty conveyed this to Wade on Thursday and he agreed and told us to come for a visit.

In the mean time he encouraged his family to come instead of restricting them. When we arrived at Candy's room on Friday afternoon she was awake and so excited to see us. She had had several visitors that day but she was doing well and eager for more. She had made a turn around thanks to all of the prayers for her. We spent time reading Bible verses to her, saying prayers and even with our not so good voices singing songs about Jesus that my 3 year old grandaughter would love. Even with the breathing tube in she would smile and communicate with us.

We were told that they had tried turning off the breathing tube earlier on Friday for 25 minutes and she had done well. All of the hospital personnel were blown away by her turn around. Today (Saturday) we visited again for several hours and she has done so well they decided to remove the breathing tube so they did about 1PM. She did fantastic and now she just has an oxygen cannula to her nose.

The first things she told us were: I am bored! I am so hungry! I want to go home now!

It was explained that because of her bowel surgery things had not woke up enough (no Bowel tones yet) for her tummy to accept food. Her C diff infection that caused the bowel surgery is doing well on antibiotics but is not totally gone yet so you have to gown and glove up to go in her room. She has lots more baby steps to accomplish to get all of the other tubes out but this was a giant step. In other words a miracle has happened!!!!!!!! Keep the prayers going! She sure does not need a set back.

Wade has said that anyone who would like to come and visit may now come and help to aide her recovery. (She is bored!) He would especially love it if people can come during the week when it is harder for the family members to visit. It is also important for anyone coming to know that a strict rest period  for patient nap time is enforced between 2 and 4 PM in ICU. Of course, do not go if you having any symptoms of a cold or flu. Real flowers are not allowed in ICU.

Candy is in the 9th floor ICU in the East wing of Harborview. Go through the closed double doors and ask for directions to Candy at the ICU desk. You can check with information before you go to make sure they have not moved her. It should be several days still before they do.

For those who cannot visit Cards and notes are encouraged too. Now she can really enjoy them. We know that Candy would love to hear from all of you and thank you personally for all of your prayers!

Thanks, Patty and Janice

10. From Judy Nicholson's email 3/19/2011: Hi Everyone, I got a late call from Patty and I want to share with you all that it is “touch and go” with Candy.  She is still in ICU.  She is still in desperate need of prayer, as is the family.  And, also, I would think, her circle of friends, one of whom is Patty.  Thank you for continuing your support.

9. From Judy Nicholson's email 3/10/2011: Hi Everyone, Patty has called with an update on Candy.  I guess they did not remove the entire colon, but will be able to use her small intestine to get her all hooked back together so she will not have a colostomy.  She is still in serious condition.  She does have some water on her lungs.  She is continuing to improve little tiny bit by little tiny bit and Patty says she still needs lots of prayer.

There is also an issue concerning Candy that Patty wants us to be aware of that involves their personal finances and the maintaining of their home accounts, such as utilities, etc., which are in shambles [due to her absense].  I guess the kids are doing the best they can, but Patty would like us all to know that if anyone can send any donation, even $5 would help.  Contact Patty to find out how to go about contributing if you would like to. [see the notes at the end of this post for contribution info from Patty].

There is also news about Patty – she is having angioplasty with a stint on St. Patrick’s Day.  She has been short of breath lately, had some tests, and they found a blood clot that they are going to take care of.  She’s looking forward to having it done so she can feel better.  So she needs our prayers too.

I forgot to mention last time that Wendy’s father came home from rehab the other day.  So that was good news.  She came up and spent the night and helped get him settled in back home.  I got to have a nice visit with her.  She looked fantastic!

Will send more news when I hear it.  Take care.

Notes:(1) From Patty DuToit: I have asked Candy's son, Wade [Johnston], to let me know his address.  If you do donate, please put on the check that this donation is for Candy's oil and electricity bills.  Because of Stan's death their accounts are tied up and that makes it impossible for the kids to get the money out, [according to] the executor.  Any amount will help. Cheers! Patty du Toit, Broker - 503-990-2088 cell
