Jan 2010:
Life remains an adventure. I am now retired afte working 39 years as an Electronics Engineer/ Physicist for the navy doing development and testing of under water weapon systems. The job was very interesting, rewarding and even hazardous at times. The work required travel all over the US, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and Hawaii and often involved going to sea on various navy ships and submarines to conduct tests and evaluate crew performance.
Some highlights of the job included work on aircraft carriers during pre-deployment battle group exercises (including flying on and off the carrier), evaluating ship equipment survival during explosive shock testing and being on numerous submarines acting as targets for test torpedoes. On one such occasion, the submarine I was on experienced an extreme casualty (flood and fire) forcing all to abandon ship 100 miles off the coast southern California in the middle of the night during high seas.
I continue to officiate high school basketball, though it gets more difficult to stay ahead of the fast break. Some highlights in this endeavor include being on the officiating crew for the 1992 Class III (Seattle Center Arena), the 2001 Class IA (Yakima Sundome) and the 2002 Class IVA (Tacoma Dome) high school state championship tournaments and for the annual World Youth Basketball Tournament, twice in Kona, Hawaii and four times in Maui, Hawaii.
My wife, Rene' (class of '63 also) and I live in Bremerton in the nest vacated by our 4 boys. Since retirement, Rene' and I have travelled some but remain somewhat reclusive. My son's family is a neighbor so we see much of our grandson and it's a joy to watch him grow up. Golf is high on the priorities.
I still have the one-armed bandit (still operational)me and several of our esteemed classmates (including Rene') liberated from a room above the old liquor store on 2nd street (2 blocks from the police station).
